ASTM A516 is also known as ASME SA516. The A516 / SA516 standard specification for pressure vessel plates, carbon steel, for moderate- and lower-temperature service. A grade ASME SA709 carbon steel plate sheet intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is required, and is normally found in moderate and lower temperature applications. All plates over 1-1/2″ Thick are required to be normalized. A516 Grade 70 steel is the most popular pressure vessel grade of steel plate in the industry.
